How to Prepare your Home when having a Baby? - Bliss Home Design Blog - Mariana Jaramillo

Nobody prepares us for parenthood. Never in a million years could we even possibly begin to imagine what parenthood looks like before we have our own child. nobody teaches us the new skills that we need to gain or explains to us how our homes must adapt for the arrival of a new baby.

We change; our whole lives change. We need to adapt and grow as we start to navigate this new season of life, where we have new priorities, perspectives, fears, wishes and responsibilities. It is absolutely necessary to be flexible and willing to learn, as every day brings new challenges and lessons.

That’s exactly what must happen to our homes as well. We need them to be flexible and to accommodate our ever-changing needs in every step of the way, so that they can support us and adapt to the needs of our evolving families.

As soon as we find out that our family will grow we need to start asking ourselves some important questions. Where will my baby sleep? Where will I feed my baby? Where will we play and do some tummy time? Where will I change diapers and bathe him/her? and what changes do i need to make in my home so that it can support us in this journey?

For all of these questions you must have in mind that babies grow so fast and that they will have many different needs specific to their age or to their unique development, so its good to plan in advance flexible spaces that will accommodate also the needs of toddlers and of kids, so that your spaces will evolve in time without a big investment.

Also, you must ALWAYS, inform yourself on how to make your home a SAFE SPACE for your baby and remove any security hazards that might be present in your home! Start thinking where your baby will crawl and explore. Where can he hit his head? Where are the energy plugs? Are all toxic cleaning chemicals or medicines out of reach? Are there any loose furniture where he might want to climb? These are just examples, but you might need to go to each space of your home and see what things might be secured and which others removed.

Parenthood is an ongoing life lesson, we learn how to become parents along the way and with so many bumps on the road. Once we start, we will never stop learning and we need to be resilient in different situations and circumstances, so make sure you use your home as your ally and as one of your best tools to provide you and your family a safe space to grow and evolve together.
